Rochdale woman to walk 100 km through Sahara desert for British Skin Foundation
A woman prepares to travel 100 km through the Sahara Desert to raise funds for the British Skin Foundation.
Rebecca Graham, who turns 32 on July 14, will undertake the mammoth five-day walk in November with the goal of raising £ 2,500.
During the trek, Rebecca will cross valleys, gorges, plateaus, sand dunes and oases in the scorching landscape of Morocco.
After deciding to take on the challenge in November last year, Rebecca has been in training since January of this year.
“It was hard work, oh my gosh,” said Rebecca, who lives in Spotland with her ginger domestic cat Crystal.
“I did a personal trainer session every week, I also did HIIT workouts, spin classes and obviously walked everywhere.
“Over the past year I have lost a lot of weight which has been a little by-product. I have to continue this training now because 100 km is quite a distance.
“It’s literally in the middle of nowhere. It will definitely be an experience – I can’t wait to be there.
With 15 years of experience in the beauty industry, Rebecca, who now works for healthcare agency Newcross Healthcare Solutions, has witnessed the good work of the British Skin Foundation.
She said: “I have met a lot of men and women who suffered from pretty severe rashes, severe eczema and even skin cancer, so I was always interested in that sort of thing, so when i saw the challenge i thought it would be perfect.
“It’s great to really raise money and test my own fitness as well.
“The foundation raises money for treatment, research, awareness – there’s not something it doesn’t do in skin care.”
Rebecca added that the challenge being in the desert, this provides a great opportunity to raise awareness about skin issues.
“Being in the Sahara, it’s going to be pretty hot, so that’s a way of saying you’re out in the sun but you can still protect your skin,” she said.
“I burn myself pretty easily, but to get there I have to watch my skin.
“Sometimes with skin care there’s a lot of stigma as well. People who suffer from acne, eczema or psoriasis are usually still quite embarrassed and over 70% of those surveyed say it affects their self-confidence.
“Especially for the younger ones it can be very important for them too to grow up and have a pretty big impact on them. So if I can raise awareness about these conditions that would be amazing.”
Rebecca also plans to raise funds via a raffle and a booth at the Craftsman’s Fair.
